Prof. Sandy Smith graduated MSc in Microbiology at the University of Otago in 1961, and completed his PhD under the guidance of Molly Marples in 1964. After a 3-year position at Massey, Sandy returned to Dunedin as Senior Lecturer in Microbiology following the retirement of Molly Marples in 1967. Since then his teaching and research interests have been in clinical microbiology, especially opportunistic fungal infections and antibiotic resistance. Many honours acknowledge the major contributions Sandy has made to Microbiology teaching, research and administration, the latter including 8 years as Head of Department. In 2005 Prof. Smith was awarded the Royal Society of New Zealand Silver Medal for his contributions to Medical Mycology in New Zealand.
