Edward (Ted) Chamberlain

Elected to Honorary Membership: 1978Dr Edward (Ted ) Chamberlain was born in Masterton in 1906. He was educated at Wairarapa College and Victoria University In 1928 he was appointed to the staff of the Plant Research Station at Palmerston North, an organisation from which several Divisions of what was later to become the DSIR developed. There he worked on diseases of potato and tomato before becoming a specialist in plant viruses. He was able to show that viruses affect the yield and quality of many plants important in agriculture, horticulture and fruit growing, and he initiated studies on their control. These methods included certification, breeding for resistance, control of vectors, and heat treatment of nucleus plant stocks.
Dr Chamberlain was Director of the Plant Diseases Division of DSIR Auckland from 1957 until his retirement in 1968. He was a foundation member of the NZMS and was appointed Vice-President in 1960 and President in 1962-64. He was elected an Honorary Member of the Society in 1978. Ted Chamberlain died in 1993.
