What's new in the Clinical Microbiology SIG?

The SIG has been relatively inactive for sometime; this begs the question: what can we do to re-invigorate its activities? Here are several suggestions that have come to light.

  • Organise appropriate workshops of interest to SIG members.

One possibility would be to carry out such activities in co-operation with the Australian Society for Microbiology, as ASM has a very active medical microbiology faction. Moreover, this would be a possible means to maintain an association with the Australian Society. The executive of NZMS has signalled that it is open to financial support of SIG activities.

  • Utilise the website to promote dissemination of information to SIG members.

For example, highlights of research activities, awards, scholarships and positions available in laboratories, publications of interest and meetings, workshops and conferences that may be relevant to SIG members.

  • Foster associations with members of related societies with similar aims.

For example, the Australiasian Society for Infectious Disease (ASID), or the New Zealand Institute of Medical Laboratory Scientists (NZIMLS). Many SIG members may well already be members of such associations.

If you have further suggestions about how the SIG might be reactivated, please email the convenor. Similarly, if you have details of positions or scholarships available in your institution, highlights of your research activities and results, or information about meetings/workshops/conferences of interest to members of the SIG, please forward them to the convenor for inclusion on the website and dissemination to members.
