Background | Each year, as part of the Annual Meeting of the Society, the society makes an award to a distinguished speaker and invites the recipient to present an oration to the meeting. This award has rapidly become a significant and important part of the meeting and is a vehicle for the society to recognise the acheivements of microbiologists in New Zealand. The following is a list of past recipients of the award.

 

2011 Distinguished Speaker: Prof. Gillian Lewis, Auckland University
	Brief Biography: Professor Gillian Lewis is an environmental microbiologist at the University of Auckland.  She is Head of the School of Biological Sciences, Deputy Director of the Centre for Microbial Innovation and until recently Associate Dean, Research of the Faculty of Science. Gillian is a past President and committee member of the New Zealand Microbiology Society, and an acting academic and graduate student mentor.
Her research into applied ecology of natural and contaminating microorganisms currently focuses on restoration of degraded freshwaters.  Specific emphasis is on microbial composition and response of natural stream biofilm communities to changing environmental conductors associated to human use and the ecology of bacteria recognised as surrogates and human health risk.
