History of our society
Honorary members

The New Zealand Microbiological Society was founded in 1956 to promote and disseminate knowledge of microbiology in New Zealand. Before, while  there were many microbiologists active in universities, hospitals, government-supported research centres and industry,  they were working in small isolated groups and rarely met.

A summary of the history of microbiology in New Zealand and the NZMS is available here.

Our society awards Honorary Memberships  to persons who have given "service of outstanding merit" to New Zealand microbiology. A list of all of our honorary members is available here.
